Types of Elephants – The African and Asian Type Differences

We know the elephant to be the biggest living vertebrate in the Animalia realm. The various elephants structure the family known as the Elephantidae, which is important for the request of Proboscidea, a gathering of eutherian warm-blooded animals.

ASIAN ELEPHANTS

  1. Indian elephants are the extent of aisan elephants. Usually the afican elephants are larger in size compared to the aisan elephants, they also have smaller sizeof ears compared to the African elephant and as of tusk in Asian elephant some of the males can only form a tusk where in African elephant both male and female can grow tusk.
  2. These elephants are usually found in the southern region of the country and are found to have 112 different species of plant as their appetite.The most common threats to these elephants are :
  • degradation.
  • Habitat loss.
  • Fragmentation.

The life of Indian elephants are up to 45-50 years. The habitat the Indian elephants are dense forest including scrub forest and evergreen tropical forest.

SUMATRAN ELEPHANT : Sumatran elephants are found on Indonesia island. These elephants are smaller in size compared to Indian elephants and African elephants.The major threat to these elephants are : 

  • Degradation.
  • Fragmentation.
  • Poaching.
  • Habitat loss.

In Indonesia the island has more population of humans as compared to the elephants, this is because of the conflicts of the population of humans and elephants, which resulted in a 70% population loss in elephants as there were less forest and more human threats.

The sumatran elephants are very peaceful, the female sumatran elephants can live upto 70-75 years and can give birth till they are 60 years and the male sumatran elephants live up to 60-65 years.

BORNEO ELEPHANT : Borneo elephants are one of the Asian elephants and are also known as Borneo pygmy elephants.These elephants are found in the southern region of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Usually the aisan elephants are are smaller in size compared to the african elephants but these borneo elephants are larger in sizes compared to the other asian elephants,

these borneo elephants tusks are little different from the other elephants mentioned above, these borneo elephants tusks are small compared to the other elephants in fact it it so small that you can measure it in finger like process.The threats to these borneo elephants are same as the previous elephants mentioned above, the threats are :

  • Degradation.
  • Fragmentation.
  • Habitat loss.
  • Poaching.

 In the case of Borneo elephants the population has decreased so much because of the expansion of the human land and their necessity, the humans are threatened by the elephants because of their gigantic body like structure that they take the lives of the Borneo elephants who come looking for food and water as well without being a threat to humans.

The african elephants are a compromise as two living species : African forest elephant and Afriacn bush elephant.Both of these species are known to be vulnerable and herbivore with gray skin but large in number of shape and the sizes of their tusks.Like the other elephants these elephants are also under the of hunters as these elephants are in large sizes compared to the others, it makes them more demanding in the eye of the hunters.

The lifespan of African elephants is up to 65-70 years.The African elephants habitats in the desert region searching for water.

STRAIGHT-TUSKED ELEPHANTS : These straight- tusked elephants are also known as Palaeoloxodon antiquus, these elephants are extinct species of elephants that were found in Europe and Western asia during the Pleistocene period.

These straight-tusked elephants used to live in small herds.The isolated tusk of the elephants were found in later years by humans, either just the tusk because the finding the whole body skeleton were rare but also found by humans in later years.

These straight-tusked elephants are way gigantic compared to all the elephants living in this period.These elephants preferred fresh water just as the living elephants , they also prefer warm weather and flourishment.

These elephants are extinct because they became the prey of early humans in the region of Europe.Dwarfed elephants are the evolved version of these straight-tusked elephants, they might not be huge the straight-tusked elephants but go after the straight-tusked as the their ancestors in early period.

Elephants are the largest existing animals in the world and also are mammals of the family “Elephantidae”.Elephants are also known for their sharp memory.

Elephants are known to be megaherbivores.

Elephants are very kind animal and also is used for the help for human to carry around the heavy belongings and also used for safari.Elephants are also known their beautiful tusk but unfortunately some of the hunter takes their lives for the tusk, which became a huge problem are now the coming generation of elephants are evolving themselves without growing tusk so they could not come across a hunter.Elephants likes to be in water but can’t be in water for a long time as they have to move forward in the journey, elephants usually have rough skin as well. You will find many types of elephants in the world and here some of them.
